I documented with photos new developments under construction in my community in a 3 km radius. The construction is happening at a fast hectic pace, changing and impacting the community in good and bad ways. Sites include South False Creek (Olympic Village and Condo Community), to the new Canada Line along the Cambie St. corridor. I have also included the construction of a new Community Centre and Library and Senior Facilities, to homeowners renovating their houses.
I picked out eight traditional quilting square patterns. The ribs of the quilt that separate each square are maps from the area in which I live.
The recycled materials that I have used in this project are salvaged vinyl siding and electrical wire that was stripped from a house in my neighbourhood. I used the vinyl siding as the backing for my photographic collaged images. I drilled holes in the vinyl squares and then hand stitched the electrical wire though the holes to quilt the squares together. To hang the industrial quilt I used a salvaged copper pipe.
About the Artist
Janine Duns graduated in 1983 from Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Over the past 25 years, she has combined time in her studio with intervals of travel and study. Janine’s art has been in numerous shows and her artworks are in many private and corporate collections throughout Canada.
About Janine Duns′ Art
Janine has focused her artwork on the human made structures and natural forms found both in the urban and rural landscapes. She is intrigued by her perception of the ephemeral quality of these forms. In both, she sees changes as she pass by them and her art attempts to capture this.
From a technical perspective, she has chosen to take a close look at her subjects to force the viewer to focus on the small parts, working together to create the whole. People tend to look at the big picture but miss the beauty of the intricate details.
Artist Statement
My inspiration for my art comes from my love of travel and hiking. I look at the details in nature and in architecture; it’s about observation and have chosen to take a closer look at the lines in human made forms and the natural forms in nature. My personal fascination lies in the force and movement of line and how they interact with each other.
